rob glassett aka fold has been playing his trade of quality house music for over 10 years now. with a seemingly bottomless record bag, his varied and soulful sets at panorama bar and on nts have seen him gain increasing recognition. his return to manmakemusic sums up what hes been perfecting over these last years: timeless house music. from the disco echoes of mr w00d to the dubbed-out thump of keif chugwin, this is one versatile ep which were proud to have on the imprint.

one would never think of mystic rituals when thinking of basque county. yet, this might be a premature thought. naturally, the isle of haiti or the american deep south come to mind when thinking of these tribal traditions.

after an a-side debut on m_red ltd’s heady 10’’ series, shadowy outfit overall severity return with their first full outing for key vinyl. much like the slabs of steely sonic wares that have paved the way before it, “knowing the healing” presents three works of on-point dance floor material we’ve come to associate with the underground tastemaker. “explain pain” is the ep’s aggravated opener. a pounding kick and itchy percussion unfurls into a din of claps and noises, spliced with melodious peals and a low-slung sort of groove. “backfiring nerves” is one of those cool peak-time weapons: frantic yet subtle, deeply groovy and plied with much-loved vintage crashes. “parasympathetic” then concludes in the form of a chugging basement bomb awash with bleary acid tones, crystal hats and muted dissonant chimes. all in all, “knowing the healing” marks a powerful entry into the ring from these ones-to-watch newcomers.

neustadtmusik, with great pleasure, presents two excellent new tracks. dietrich & strolch have created an exquisite, smooth piece of music. the two brothers, who are known for their live sets that take their audience on a journey, have combined their passion for percussions and wicked synth sound perfectly. this track takes you to a deep underground techno dance floor where you find yourself dancing with your eyes closed and drifting away into another dimension, to the ocean, the sun and warm sand between your feet and back. sous sol s track on this release has it all, including a sense of delight that brings out a smile on your face. the rolling bass line brings in mind the siberian express rolling through the cold winter landscape of russia while at the same time there is warmth and the heart gets filled with these warm elements. this rolls parallel to a consistent build up throughout the whole track that makes this composition just perfect.

with all the negative media surrounding detroit and its inhabitants, this hard hitting ep from urs alone raises some disturbing issues about responsibility, commitment, faith and honesty from the very institutions that teach these same values. this is a sonic question!

the ep is called spotlight diktat in reference to the feeling some djs have when they are on tour. a kind of dj melancholia generated by airplanes, dehumanized hotels, waiting hours in boring terminals, basically traveling alone. i made these tracks out of this mood. at first they sounds like the typical groovy dance tracks, but when the melody comes out, you immediately feel there is something wrong now the track is on and you still dance (of course its made for that) but you could almost cry to it too. so this is what happens when a dj or a producer has to do their job, but they aren t really in the mood for it. when the party comes, they just forget everything and make the show happen regardless. they have to bear the spotlight diktat and keep on entertaining people regardless of what they have in mind.
